DIABETES MELITUS TYPE-1:
- It is an autoimmune disease which means it results from immune system mistakenly attacking part of body. Immune system incorrectly targets insulin producing beta-cells in pancreas.
- It is often diagnosed in childhood.
- Often associated with higher than normal ketones levels at diagnosis.
- Need to inject themselves with insulin to compensate for death of beta cells. It is insulin dependent.
- Often hereditary and unpreventable.
DIABETES MELITUS TYPE-II:
- It is characterized by the body losing its ability to respond to insulin. It is known as insulin resistance.
- Usually diagnosed in over 30 years old.
- Often associated with high blood pressure or cholesterol level at diagnosis.
- The body compensates for the ineffectiveness of the insulin by producing more, but cannot always produce enough.
- It can be hereditary but excess weight, lack of exercise and unhealthy diet increases it chances.
