ARTERIES:
- These are the blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the tissues of the body.
- They are deeply positioned within the body.
- They are more muscular than veins and they don't have valves because pressure from the heart is strong to make the blood flow in one direction.
- They would generally remain open if blood flow stopped, due to their thick muscular layer.
- They are more stronger and flexible than veins.
- Only pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood.
VEINS:
- These are the blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood from the tissues of the body back to the heart.
- They are superficially positioned in the body and closely beneath the skin.
- They are less vascular than arteries, but contain valves to keep blood flowing in one direction.
- They would collapse if blood flow stops.
- Veins are less strong and flexible than arteries.
- Only pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood.
