Differnces between arteries and veins

ARTERIES:

  1. These are the blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the tissues of the body.
  2. They are deeply positioned within the body.
  3. They are more muscular than veins and they don't have valves because pressure from the heart is strong to make the blood flow in one direction.
  4. They would generally remain open if blood flow stopped, due to their thick muscular layer.
  5. They are more stronger and flexible than veins.
  6. Only pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood.

VEINS:

  1. These are the blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood from the tissues of the body back to the heart.
  2. They are superficially positioned in the body and closely beneath the skin.
  3. They are less vascular than arteries, but contain valves to keep blood flowing in one direction.
  4. They would collapse if blood flow stops.
  5. Veins are less strong and flexible than arteries.
  6. Only pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood.
